Lost A Phone Anywhere In India? Here’s What You Should Do!

1) File a police complaint without fail

Never ignore the loss of your phone just because you can afford to buy a new handset. Always ensure that you register police complaint of your lost phone. This will help you in future in case if your phone gets used for any sort of criminal activities. In such cases, police records will not only help you prove your innocence but it will also save your time from the lengthy investigation procedures. Also, before visiting the police station, remember two important things mentioned below to avoid running from one police station to another.

a) If you remember where you have lost the phone

Try to remember the place where you saw your phone last. The complaint will be registered at the same police station. If you have left it at some place, then the complaint will be registered at the same place where you have left your phone.

b) In case you don’t remember the place, where you had left the phone

Well in this case, it is important to make note of when you realized that your phone was stolen/lost. In case you left your phone somewhere and then boarded a public transport, the spot where you realised that your phone had been stolen will be considered as the place of offence and you will have to reach the nearest police station to make the complaint.

2) Always keep IMEI number handy

Always make it a point to keep your IMEI number handy. That doesn’t mean that you should save the number on your phone. It is better if you save your IMEI number on the cell phones of you friends and family members. The best is to keep a written record somewhere. If you keep your IMEI number (it is the number written on the box of your cell phone) it becomes easier for the cops to take your complaint. Rather than taking note of the model number in the complaint, the cops will write the IMEI number too.

Doing this will also help the cops to trace your cell phone in the future. On many occasions, the cops zero in on the group of robbers and thieves who specialize in stealing cell phones. These cell phones are transported out of the state so that it becomes tougher for the cops to identify the handset with the help of its IMEI number. But in case if you are lucky and the cops recover your phone from thief, IMEI number is the only option through which you would be able to prove that the said cell phone belongs to you.

3) Take help from the control room (dial 100) to know the police station you should visit

If you let the police control room know the exact spot where you had lost your phone or the place where you realise that your cell phone has been missing, the officials at the control room would be able to help you in identifying the police station where you could visit and register your complaint. Once you visit the police station do not argue with the cops to register case of robbery for the missing phone unless someone has snatched it from your hand.

4) Take the name of the police officer who attends you at police station

At the police station you will be asked to fill up a form regarding your missing cell phone. Once you are done with filling up the form, do not forget to take the copy of it. Please remember that taking copy of the form is your right and the cops cannot deprive you of it. Though there are very remote chances of finding your phone, it is important for you to take the name and designation of the officer who had registered your complaint. Later you can call up the said officer and take update on your matter in case if there is any.
